Effect of plant-soil system on the restoration of community stability after wildfire in the northeast margin of Qinghai-Tibet plateau

Wildfires, as an environmental filter, are pivotal ecological disturbances that reshape plant communities and soil dynamics, playing a crucial role in regulating biogeographic patterns and ecosystem services. In this study, we aim to explore the effects of wildfires on forest ecosystems, specifically focusing on the plant-soil feedback mechanisms within the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Utilizing Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM), we investigated the interrelationships among soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, species diversity, and community stability at varying post-fire recovery stages (5, 15, and 23 years). Results indicated that in the early recovery stages, rapid changes in soil properties such as decreased pH (p < 0.001) and increased nutrient availability facilitate the emergence of early successional species with high resource utilization traits. As the ecosystem evolved toward a climax community, the soil and vegetation exhibit increased stability. Furthermore, soil enzyme activities displayed dynamic patterns that corresponded with changes in soil nutrient content, directly influencing the regeneration and diversity of plant communities. Importantly, our study documented a transition in the influence of soil properties on community stability from direct positive effects in initial recovery phases to negative impacts in later stages, while indirect benefits accrue through increased species diversity and enzyme activity. Vegetation composition and structure changed dynamically with recovery time during community succession. Plant nutrient absorption and accumulation affected nutrient dynamics in the soil, influencing plant regeneration, distribution, and diversity. Our results underscore the complex interactions between soil and vegetation that drive the recovery dynamics post-wildfire, highlighting the resilience of forest ecosystems to fire disturbances. This study contributes to the understanding of post-fire recovery processes and offers valuable insights for the management and restoration of fire-affected forest ecosystems.

Diversity and Composition of Soil Acidobacterial Communities in Different Temperate Forest Types of Northeast China

To gain an in-depth understanding of the diversity and composition of soil Acidobacteria in five different forest types in typical temperate forest ecosystems and to explore their relationship with soil nutrients. The diversity of soil Acidobacteria was determined by high-throughput sequencing technology. Soil Acidobacteria’s alpha-diversity index and soil nutrient content differed significantly among different forest types. β-diversity and the composition of soil Acidobacteria also varied across forest types. Acidobacterial genera, such as Acidobacteria_Gp1, Acidobacteria_Gp4, and Acidobacteria_Gp17, play key roles in different forests. The RDA analyses pointed out that the soil pH, available nitrogen (AN), carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, available phosphorus (AP), total carbon (TC), and total phosphorus (TP) were significant factors affecting soil Acidobacteria in different forest types. In this study, the diversity and composition of soil Acidobacteria under different forest types in a temperate forest ecosystem were analyzed, revealing the complex relationship between them and soil physicochemical properties. These findings not only enhance our understanding of soil microbial ecology but also provide important guidance for ecological conservation and restoration strategies for temperate forest ecosystems.

From Residue to Resource: A Physicochemical and Microbiological Analysis of Soil Microbial Communities through Film Mulch-Enhanced Rice Straw Return Strategies

Promoting rice straw in situ return is an important strategy for improving soil quality. From 2018 to 2021, we investigated the effects of rice straw return with microbial agents and film covering technology on soil physical and chemical properties at different layer depths, as well as the soil microbial community structure, in Hunan, southern China. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of microbial agents (T1), film mulch covering (T2), and the application of microbial agents combined with film mulch (T3) on the soil physicochemical properties and microbial community after rice straw in situ return. The results show that, after three years of continuous treatment, T3 significantly increased the soil temperature by 17.76–22.97%, T2 significantly increased the water content by 34.27–46.23%, and T1 and T3 significantly increased the soil pH. The addition of microbial agents combined with film mulch resulted in a notable increase in both the number of OTUs and the Chao1 index of soil microorganisms. Additionally, the model of promoting rice straw in situ return (the application of a microbial agent combined with film mulch) was shown to promote the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. RDA was used for the investigation, and the findings showed that soil microorganisms were significantly influenced by the TOC content, pH, and water content. These findings provide evidence of an effective method for accelerating the decomposition of late rice straw and guiding soil improvement in tobacco–rice rotation regions.

Cupriavidus B-7 immobilized biochar: an effective solution for Cd accumulation alleviation and growth promotion in pakchoi (Brassica Chinensis L.)

Cd contamination, especially in farmland soil, can pose serious threats to human health as well as ecological security. Stabilization is an important strategy for agricultural soil Cd remediation. In this study, a Cd-resistant strain (Cupriavidus B-7) was isolated and loaded onto cow manure (CDB), rice straw (RSB) and pine wood biochar (PB) to investigate its effects on Cd stabilization by a 60-day pot experiment. Results indicated that the Cupriavidus B-7-loaded biochar (labelled as CDBB, PBB and RSBB) reduced the CaCl2-extractable Cd by 43.06–59.78%, which was significantly superior to individual applications of Cupriavidus B-7 and biochar. Likewise, the soil physicochemical properties, urease, catalase and phosphatase activities were improved, indicating improved soil health. Consequently, dry weights of pakchoi’s shoot and root were increased by 938.9–1230.9% and 149.1–281.2%, respectively, by applying CDBB, PBB and RSBB. Meanwhile, the Cd accumulation in pakchoi shoots decreased by 38.06–50.75%. Notably, the RSBB exhibited an optimal performance on pakchoi growth promotion and Cd accumulation alleviation. The structural equation model indicated the synergistic effect on pakchoi growth promotion and Cd accumulation decreased between biochar and Cupriavidus B-7. Our research provides some new insights into the development of strategies for green and sustainable remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.Graphical

Paper mill wastes and biochar improve physiochemical properties and reduce heavy metals leaching risks in podzolic soils

Abstract Background: The incorporation of industrial wastes, such as wood ash and paper sludge, as soil amendments is vital for both environmental sustainability and agroecosystem productivity. Herein, we evaluated the effects of wood ash and paper sludge alone and in combination with biochar on the physicochemical properties and heavy metal leaching risks in podzolic soils.&amp;#xD;Methods: The treatments included limestone (control), wood ash, paper sludge, wood ash+paper sludge, limestone+biochar, wood ash+biochar, paper sludge+biochar and wood ash+paper sludge+biochar, arranged in a 4x2 factorial design with three replicates. The Hydrus-1D model was employed to simulate the water movement under these soil amendments using leaching colums. &amp;#xD;Results: Overall, wood ash, paper sludge and biochar application significantly increased the pH of amended soil compared to control. Paper sludge amended treatments alone or in combination with biochar significantly decreased bulk density (8-17%) and increased the total porosity (14-25%). While biochar addition to wood ash and paper sludge significantly reduced the concentrations of Cd (by 6.42%), Co (by 10.95%), Cu (by 11.76%), Pb (by 30%) and Ni (by 3.75%) in the collected leachates. The treatment paper sludge + biochar was found to be the most effective treatment to retain the heavy metals, with maximum plant available water (0.28 cm3 cm-3) and field capacity (0.36 cm3 cm-3) compared to control treatment. The predictions from Hydrus-1D showed that paper mill wastes with biochar has a significant potential to increase the volumetric moisture contents of amended podzolic soil, with the simulated leaching times and saturation levels closely aligning with the measured values. &amp;#xD;Conclusion: Paper sludge + biochar treatment showed improved soil physicochemical properties and displayed lower heavy metals than allowed limits to be used in soil. Further, experiments are needed to assess the effects of papermill waste products on podzolic soil properties under variable field conditions.&amp;#xD;

Effects of soil microbial ecology on ginsenoside accumulation in Panax ginseng across different cultivation years

The quality of ginseng is greatly influenced by ecological factors, especially soil factors. However, there are few reports on the association between the physicochemical properties of ginseng rhizosphere soil, enzyme activity, microbial bacterial community, and ginsenoside content accumulation in ginseng planted at different ages. In order to investigate the relationship between the soil microbial ecology of ginseng and the content of ginsenosides, this study compared the differences in the rhizosphere soil microecological environment and ginsenoside accumulation between ginseng planted for one, two, and three years, using soil without ginseng cultivation as a control. The results showed that monomer saponins Ro, Re, Rf, Rb1, and total ginsenoside content increased significantly (P < 0.05), while monomer saponins Rb2, Rd, Rh2, and Rg3 content decreased significantly in three-year-old ginseng, (P < 0.05). And soil pH, soil bulk weight and soil enzyme activity in ginseng rhizosphere soils altered the abundance and diversity of rhizosphere soil bacterial community. Redundancy analysis and Pearson correlation analysis revealed that soil pH, soil bulk density, soil urease, and protease were the primary factors influencing the bacterial community in the soil around roots of one, two, three years old ginseng. Co-occurrence network visualization analysis indicated that seven bacterial communities, Planctomycetota, Methylomirabilota, Verrucomicrobiota and Acidobacteriota at the phylum level, Vicinamibacterales_unclassified, Vicinamibacteraceae_unclassified and Candidatus_Udaeobacter at the genus level, had a significant effect on the synthesis of ginsenosides. In summary, soil urease, pH, and soil bulk density in agricultural soils can regulate soil physicochemical properties, soil enzymatic activities, and soil bacterial community abundance. These factors are key drivers of the ginseng soil microbial ecology in ginseng cultivation. These studies will provide a scientific basis for subsequent optimization of soil improvement techniques for cultivated ginseng in farmland by improving the soil microbial ecology.

Machine learning prediction of health risk and spatial dependence of geogenic contaminated groundwater from the Hetao Basin, China

Geogenic contaminated groundwater (GCG), characterized by elevated arsenic, fluoride, and iodine levels, present a significant challenge to public health and government management. Conventional survey-based approaches of collecting groundwater samples, conducting physicochemical tests, and performing spatial interpolation to obtain regional groundwater chemical component maps are inefficient and costly. More importantly, it does not take into account the actual hydrogeological conditions or the characteristics of pollutant transport and enrichment. To address this issue, we utilized Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) to analyze the likelihood of occurrence of arsenic, fluoride, and iodine as well as their spatial distribution in shallow groundwater from the Hetao Basin. Our study incorporated 20 indicators related to meteorology, soil physicochemical properties, and groundwater conditions, along with 1505 labeled samples consisting of groundwater arsenic, fluoride, and iodine concentrations and their corresponding coordinates. Subsequently, the study automatically analyzed the meteorological, soil physicochemical properties and groundwater conditions by constructing a machine learning model using the available data. In order to optimise and select the best prediction model, this paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the prediction performance of various machine learning models. The accuracy (AC), area under curve (AUC) and mean squared error (MSE) were calculated to predict the spatial distribution of CGC. Subsequently, the optimized model for predicting the spatial distribution of GCG was selected. The results showed that the XGBoost algorithm provided optimal predictions for groundwater with arsenic concentrations above 10 μg/L and fluoride concentrations exceeding 1.5 mg/L, whereas the RF model provided the best predictions for groundwater with arsenic concentrations surpassing 50 μg/L and iodine concentrations exceeding 100 μg/L. Subsequently, groundwater health risk zones were delineated based on an optimal prediction model, and demographic analysis was conducted in both the direct and potential groundwater risk zones. Model predictions indicated that hundreds of thousands of people in the Hetao Basin were facing a public health crisis caused by high concentrations of arsenic, fluoride and iodine in groundwater. These findings underscore the significant health challenge in the study area. Considering the agricultural development and increasing groundwater use in the area, our findings can guide local governments in managing the extent of groundwater development, establishing control zones, and enhancing protection measures for populations at risk from groundwater contamination.

Temperature sensitivity of aerobic and anaerobic organic carbon mineralization varies with climate and soil depth in riparian zones

The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization plays a vital role in predicting the global carbon cycle under climate change. Q10 has been extensively examined in various terrestrial ecosystems; however, in riparian zones where soil oxygen levels are highly dynamic owing to frequent flooding, Q10 should change with oxygen conditions and show spatial variation, but the mechanisms are still obscure. In this study, we collected topsoil and subsoil samples from riparian zones along a latitudinal gradient and conducted aerobic and anaerobic incubation experiments to determine the latitudinal and vertical patterns of Q10. The results showed that Q10 under anoxic conditions (average of 1.7) significantly exceeded that under oxic conditions (average of 1.4). In general, aerobic SOC mineralization is more sensitive to warming at higher latitudes than at lower latitudes, whereas the pattern is reversed under anoxic conditions. The Q10 in the topsoil was significantly higher than that in the subsoil only under oxic conditions. Metagenomics showed that the abundance of genes involved in the degradation of lignin, carbohydrate esters, and starch in the topsoil increased with latitude, whereas genes for acetate degradation were more abundant in warmer zones, regardless of soil depth. Q10 under oxic conditions was mainly influenced by soil physicochemical properties (e.g., pH and texture), whereas Q10 under anoxic conditions was jointly controlled by climate, soil texture, and acetate degradation genes. Together, anaerobic carbon (C) mineralization in riparian zones is more sensitive to temperature than aerobic metabolism, but the patterns of Q10 under oxic conditions were dependent on both latitude and depth. Our findings highlight that the discrepancies in aerobic and anaerobic C metabolism, and the C cycling process at different soil depths, might play a non-negligible role in affecting the assessment of global C emissions under climate change.

Effects of reduced snowpack due to climate warming on abiotic and biotic soil properties in alpine and boreal forest systems

Reduction in snow cover, depth, onset, and duration of seasonal snow in mid-latitude regions due to climate warming has multiple global and local scale ecosystem impacts. These effects include modulations of the hydrological cycles and increases in land surface solar radiation absorption due to decreased albedo. Changes in snow cover characteristics also affect underlying soils. Snow has an insulating effect on soils by decoupling air and soil temperatures, thus seasonal snow cover reduction leads to overall lower soil temperatures and an increase in freeze-thaw cycles. This is especially prominent during the fall and spring thaw seasons when the snow cover is not as extensive. This in turn has downstream impacts on soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Among these impacts are soil moisture reduction, temperature, frost regimes, soil pH shifts, and alteration in nutrient flux dynamics during winter, snowmelt period and the following summer growing season. These changes in soil physicochemical properties due to snowpack reduction can then impact the biological soil properties via increased plant root mortality, reduced abundance and diversity of soil arthropods, and shifts in composition, abundance and activity of soil microbial communities. All these soil biotic factors can in turn alter the dynamics of soil nutrient fluxes and future greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we integrate data on the effects of snow cover reduction on abiotic and biotic soil properties, with focus on temperate alpine and forest ecosystems and with an outlook on future impacts.

Mitigating microplastic stress on peanuts: The role of biochar-based synthetic community in the preservation of soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity

Tire-derived rubber crumbs (RC), as a new type of microplastics (MPs), harms both the environment and human health. Excessive use of plastic, the decomposition of which generates microplastic particles, in current agricultural practices poses a significant threat to the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems, worldwide food security and human health. In this study, the application of biochar, a carbon-rich material, to soil was explored, especially in the evaluation of synthetic biochar-based community (SynCom) to alleviate RC-MP-induced stress on plant growth and soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities in peanuts. The results revealed that RC-MPs significantly reduced peanut shoot dry weight, root vigor, nodule quantity, plant enzyme activity, soil urease and dehydrogenase activity, as well as soil available potassium, and bacterial abundance. Moreover, the study led to the identification highly effective plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from the peanut rhizosphere, which were then integrated into a SynCom and immobilized within biochar. Application of biochar-based SynCom in RC-MPs contaminated soil significantly increased peanut biomass, root vigor, nodule number, and antioxidant enzyme activity, alongside enhancing soil enzyme activity and rhizosphere bacterial abundance. Interestingly, under high-dose RC-MPs treatment, the relative abundance of rhizosphere bacteria decreased significantly, but their diversity increased significantly and exhibited distinct clustering phenomenon. In summary, the investigated biochar-based SynCom proved to be a potential soil amendment to mitigate the deleterious effects of RC-MPs on peanuts and preserve soil microbial functionality. This presents a promising solution to the challenges posed by contaminated soil, offering new avenues for remediation.

Effects of soil conditioners on vineyard saline soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community in arid areas

AbstractSoil salinization adversely affects soil quality and ecosystem. Many researches have tried to ameliorate saline soils by soil conditioners. However, little is known about the differences in the responses of soil bacterial communities to natural and artificial conditioners applied to saline soils. Therefore, in this study, the effects of natural humic acid (IK), synthetic polymer (IP), and composite material (IF) (mixture of IK and IP (1:1)) on bacterial community structure and functional genes in saline soil were evaluated to clarify their differences. The results showed that the application of the three soil conditioners significantly reduced soil pH and Na+ content but increased soil alkaline phosphatase, urease, invertase and catalase activities, bacterial diversity, and nutrients, compared to the control (no conditioner). IK application increased bacterial relative abundance (e.g., Subgroup_6, RB41, MND1, and KD4‐96) and metabolic functions (e.g., Two‐component system and Biosynthesis of amino acids) by increasing soil nitrogen and maintaining K+ and Na+ balance. IP application increased soil alkaline phosphatase and urease activities as well as bacterial relative abundance (e.g., Subgroup_6, RB41, MND1, Gemmatimonadaceae, and KD4‐96) and metabolic functions (e.g., Quorum sensing and carbon metabolism) by increasing soil organic carbon/nitrogen content. IF application increased the bacterial relative abundance of Subgroup_6, RB41, and MND1 by increasing soil available nitrogen and regulated their metabolic pathways (e.g., ABC transporters and microbial metabolism). On the whole, IK, IP, and IF could regulate the structure and function of soil bacterial community in saline soils. This study clarifies difference in the effects of different soil conditioners on the amelioration of saline soils from the perspective of soil microbiology, and provides a reference for the amelioration of saline soils in arid areas.

Temporal patterns of endophytic microbial heterogeneity across distinct ecological compartments within the Panax ginseng root system following deforestation for cultivation

Alterations in the microbial community significantly impact the yield and quality of ginseng. Yet, the dynamics of microbial community shifts within the root endophytes of ginseng across varying cultivation periods remain inadequately understood. This study zeroes in on the microbial community variations within the xylem (M), phloem (R), and fibrous roots (X) of ginseng during the fourth (F4) and fifth (F5) years of cultivation, aiming to bridge this research gap. We assessed soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and nine individual saponins, complemented by high-throughput sequencing techniques (16S rDNA and ITS) to determine their profiles. The results showed that cultivation years mainly affected the microbial diversity of endophytic bacteria in ginseng fibrous roots compartment: the ASVs number and α-diversity Chao1 index of bacteria and fungi in F5X compartment with higher cultivation years were significantly higher than those in F4X compartment with lower cultivation years. It is speculated that the changes of fibrous roots bacterial groups may be related to the regulation of amino acid metabolic pathway. Such as D-glutamine and D-glutamate metabolism D-glutamine, cysteine and methionine metabolism regulation. The dominant bacteria in ginseng root are Proteobacteria (relative abundance 52.07–80.35%), Cyanobacteria (1.97–42.52%) and Bacteroidota (1.11–5.08%). Firmicutes (1.28–3.76%). There were two dominant phyla: Ascomycota (60.10–93.71%) and Basidiomycota (2.25–30.57%). Endophytic fungi were more closely related to soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities. AN, TK, OP, SWC and EC were the main driving factors of endophytic flora of ginseng root. Tetracladium decreased with the increase of cultivation years, and the decrease was more significant in phloem (F4R: 33.36%, F5R: 16.48%). The relative abundance of Bradyrhizobium, Agrobacterium and Bacillus in each ecological niche increased with the increase of cultivation years. The relative abundance of Bradyrhizobium and Agrobacterium in F5X increased by 8.35 and 9.29 times, respectively, and Bacillus in F5M increased by 5.57 times. We found a variety of potential beneficial bacteria and pathogen antagonists related to ginseng biomass and saponins, such as Bradyrhizobium, Agrobacterium, Bacillus and Exophiala, which have good potential for practical application and development.

Potential strategies for bioremediation of microplastic contaminated soil

The escalating production and ubiquitous presence of plastics and their degradation products, such as microplastics and nanoplastics, pose a significant environmental threat. Microplastics enter the soil through various pathways, including agricultural practices, plastic degradation, and wastewater disposal. Herein, we discussed the harmful effects of microplastics on the physicochemical properties of soil, plant growth, terrestrial fauna, and microbial activity, potentially affecting the stability and nutrient cycle of the soil ecosystem. This review delves into recent advances in potential microplastic bioremediation approaches, such as phytoremediation strategies utilized by plants and their associated microbes to accumulate, immobilize, and even degrade microplastics. Rhizosphere microorganisms play a crucial role in the degradation of microplastics, potentially utilizing them as a carbon source. Soil animals like earthworms, snails, and mealworms can also contribute significantly to bioremediation by ingesting and degrading microplastics through their gut microbiota. Various soil microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, can degrade different microplastics with the help of enzymes such as laccase, esterase, peroxidase, oxidoreductase, and hydrolases and depolymerise the larger polymer chains into smaller units that ultimately mineralize them into CO2, H2O, and CH4. Genetic engineering and synthetic biology are also used to create strains with enhanced microplastic degrading and mineralization capabilities. It holds promise for efficient bioremediation but requires further research for real-world application and scalable implementation. Overall, this review comprehensively highlights the potential of bioremediation approaches and future recommendations for tackling microplastic pollution. Further research and development are crucial for enhancing biodegradation efficiency and scaling up this strategy for environmental protection.

Response of soil organic carbon to straw return in farmland soil in China: A meta-analysis

Straw return is an effective measure to promote sustainable agriculture by significantly improving soil fertility. At present, few studies have been conducted on the most effective carbon enhancing management measures for various crops. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis using data collected from 184 literature sources, comprising 3297 data sets to analyze the carbon increase effects of straw returning in three main crops (rice, maize, and wheat) in China and to explore the influence mechanism of natural factors, soil properties, straw return measures, and cropping systems on the carbon enhancement effect. The study showed that straw return significantly increased soil organic carbon and the rate of increase was higher for wheat at 15.88% (14.74%–17.03%) than for rice at 12.7% (11.5%–13.91%) and maize at 12.42% (11.42%–13.42%), with varying degrees of improvement in other soil physicochemical properties. Natural factors have the greatest impact on the carbon increasing effect of rice fields, reaching 28.8%, especially at temperature between 10 °C and 15 °C, less than 800 mm precipitation, low latitude, and short frost-free period. Maize and wheat are most affected by soil properties, reaching 41% and 34.5% respectively. Furthermore, field management practices also play a pivotal role, organic carbon increasing obviously was observed when the C/N ratio of exogenous nutrients is bigger than 20 with the low initial organic matter. Shallow tillage and less than 7.5 t hm−2 straw returning with 3–10 years to the field are ideal for rice and maize. Crop rotation, especially in drylands, increased soil organic carbon more significantly than continuous. The results of our analysis can provide valuable insights into the effect of straw return on carbon increase. In the future, the soil carbon can be improved by adopting rational cropping patterns and straw return measures with taking into account climate and soil characteristics for different crops.

Plant biomass partitioning in alpine meadows under different herbivores as influenced by soil bulk density and available nutrients

Biomass allocation is a key mechanism for understanding the response of alpine meadow plants to environmental changes. However, the two major theories of plant biomass partitioning, that is, optimal and equidistant allocation, are highly controversial. This study aimed to test these hypotheses by using the biomass allocation pattern of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau alpine meadows under different herbivore assemblages and enclosures and to identify the key physicochemical factors driving changes in biomass allocation. The results showed that fencing and grazing lead to the allocation of more biomass to roots and shoots, respectively. Additionally, our results support the optimal allocation hypothesis, which is mainly regulated by changes in soil physicochemical properties. Specifically, the trade-off between aboveground- and belowground biomass negatively correlated with the soil bulk density, soil moisture, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus but positively correlated with available potassium. In terms of biomass trade-offs, co-grazing yaks and Tibetan sheep at a 1:6 ratio with moderate grazing intensity may be a reasonable method to use and protect alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Long-term cotton stubble return and subsoiling improve soil organic carbon by changing the stability and organic carbon of soil aggregates in coastal saline fields

Cotton stubble return and subsoiling significantly enhanced soil fertility and cotton yield in coastal saline soils. Despite these benefits, the mechanisms influencing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration remain poorly understood. To address this gap, a comprehensive ten-year study was undertaken, focusing on the effects of stubble management (either removal or return) and tillage (either non-subsoiling or subsoiling) on the physicochemical properties of both topsoil (0–20 cm) and subsoil (20–40 cm) layers, as well as on cotton yield. The objectives were to (i) quantify interannual variability (2013–2022), stubble return, and subsoiling on the soil physicochemical properties of the topsoil (0–20 cm) and subsoil (20–40 cm) and cotton yield and (ii) elucidate the mechanism by which these agricultural practices affect SOC sequestration. Findings from this decade-long investigation indicated that ten consecutive years of cotton stubble return and subsoiling at three-year intervals significantly ameliorated soil conditions by reducing the salt content, pH, and the proportion of silt plus clay, while increasing macro-aggregates, mean weight diameter (MWD), aggregates organic carbon (AOC) across various particle sizes, SOC, total nitrogen (TN) in both soil layers, and ultimately, the cotton lint yield. Interestingly, the effect of stubble return on micro-aggregates varied between the two soil layers, leading to a reduction in micro-aggregates by 11.16% in the topsoil, in contrast to a 5.7% increase in the subsoil, when compared to conditions where stubble was removed. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) indicated that the enhancements in MWD attributable to stubble return and subsoiling were primarily due to significant reductions in soil pH and salt content in both layers, which in turn fostered an increase in AOC, ultimately contributing to higher SOC levels. However, the pathways through which AOC influenced SOC varied significantly between the topsoil and subsoil, with stubble return and subsoiling increasing SOC through an increase in the macro-AOC in the topsoil, and micro-AOC in the subsoil. In summary, long-term cotton stubble return and subsoiling significantly optimize the aggregate particle size distribution and enhance the carbon sequestration potential in coastal saline cotton fields.

Rare microbial taxa as the major drivers of nutrient acquisition under moss biocrusts in karst area

Karst rocky desertification refers to the process of land degradation caused by various factors such as climate change and human activities including deforestation and agriculture on a fragile karst substrate. Nutrient limitation is common in karst areas. Moss crust grows widely in karst areas. The microorganisms associated with bryophytes are vital to maintaining ecological functions, including climate regulation and nutrient circulation. The synergistic effect of moss crusts and microorganisms may hold great potential for restoring degraded karst ecosystems. However, our understanding of the responses of microbial communities, especially abundant and rare taxa, to nutrient limitations and acquisition in the presence of moss crusts is limited. Different moss habitats exhibit varying patterns of nutrient availability, which also affect microbial diversity and composition. Therefore, in this study, we investigated three habitats of mosses: autochthonal bryophytes under forest, lithophytic bryophytes under forest and on cliff rock. We measured soil physicochemical properties and enzymatic activities. We conducted high-throughput sequencing and analysis of soil microorganisms. Our finding revealed that autochthonal moss crusts under forest had higher nutrient availability and a higher proportion of copiotrophic microbial communities compared to lithophytic moss crusts under forest or on cliff rock. However, enzyme activities were lower in autochthonal moss crusts under forest. Additionally, rare taxa exhibited distinct structures in all three habitats. Analysis of co-occurrence network showed that rare taxa had a relatively high proportion in the main modules. Furthermore, we found that both abundant and rare taxa were primarily assembled by stochastic processes. Soil properties significantly affected the community assembly of the rare taxa, indirectly affecting microbial diversity and complexity and finally nutrient acquisition. These findings highlight the importance of rare taxa under moss crusts for nutrient acquisition. Addressing this knowledge gap is essential for guiding ongoing ecological restoration projects in karst rocky desertification regions.

Biochar addition promotes soil organic carbon sequestration dominantly contributed by macro-aggregates in agricultural ecosystems of China

Soil aggregates play pivotal roles in soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation and climate change. Biochar has been widely applied in agricultural ecosystems to improve soil physicochemical properties. However, the underlying mechanisms of SOC sequestration by soil aggregation with biochar addition are not well understood at a large scale. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of 2335 pairwise data from 45 studies to explore how soil aggregation sequestrated SOC after biochar addition in agricultural ecosystems of China. Biochar addition markedly enhanced the proportions of macro-aggregates and aggregate stability, and the production of organic binding agents positively facilitated the formation of macro-aggregates and aggregate stability. Soil aggregate-associated organic carbon (OC) indicated a significantly increasement by biochar addition, which was attributed to direct and indirect inputs of OC from biochar and organic residues, respectively. Biochar stimulated SOC sequestration dominantly contributed by macro-aggregates, and it could be interpreted by a greater improvement in proportions and OC protection of macro-aggregates. Furthermore, the SOC sequestration of soil aggregation with biochar addition was regulated by climate conditions (mean annual temperature and precipitation), biochar attributes (biochar C/N ratio and pH), experimental practices (biochar addition level and duration), and agronomic managements (land type, cropping intensity, fertilization condition, and crop type). Collectively, our synthetic analysis emphasized that biochar promoted the SOC sequestration by improving soil aggregation in agricultural ecosystems of China.
